Basquiat Biography

Jean-Michel Basquiat was born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 22, 1960, shortly after the death of his elder brother, Max.

He was the second of four children of Matilda Andrades and Gérard Basquiat. He had two younger sisters: Lisane, born in 1964, and Jeanine, born in 1967.

His father, Gérard Basquiat, a CPA immigrated from Port-au- Prince, Haiti.

His mother, Matilde Basquiat, was born in Brooklyn, New York of Puerto Rican parents.

Matilde instilled a love for art in her young son by taking him to museums eventually enrolling him as a junior member of the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Basquiat was an intelligent and curious child who learned to read and write by age four in a household that spoke three languages.

His mother who loved to paint and draw encouraged her son's artistic interests. Basquiat started attending Saint Anne's, an arts-oriented exclusive private school.
